It's Only $2 Billion. What's The Big Deal? Clunk! Clunk!
So another $2 billion has been dumped into recycling cars. I talked to a friend of mine yesterday. He and his wife are certainly not deprived, they drive fairly new expensive cars, and he thought it was just great to get clunkers off the road. Well, it is! And it would be except our economy is being driven into the ground with speed-demon spending by elected representatives who are drunk on ditching dollars. Somebody in Washington has got to put the brakes on!
What's wrong with the program? It's not about helping GM and Chrysler. Yes, I know. Some foreign brands are made in the U.S., but there was no limit to restrict the deal to GM, Chrysler and other brands made in America. So imported cars are included. Glad to see that Ford Focus is selling well.
And what's a clunker? Is there a real definition? I drive an eight-year-old Chrysler that gets 27 and 30 miles per gallon. It passes the smog checks with flying colors. The car looks great and runs just fine. Hardly a clanking clunker, but it could probably qualify for euthanasia on this program. And, if I traded it in, it would be destroyed.
What do you drive? What kind of gas mileage do you get? If you plan on buying a car, I won't blame you for doing it now. Are you going for the "Cash for Clunkers" opportunity?
